Excerpt from the introduction:
"Bone Harvest" was written in part as an introduction to the novel Harvest Moon. Ironically enough, the novel Harvest Moon was written as a sequel of sorts to
the short story by the exact same name. I have, from time to time, written short
stories that were meant to link to my novels, but in this case, it was the first
time I'd ever written a novel that linked back to one of my earliest works.
I have a long-lasting love of Halloween and all things related to it. Look at my list of credentials and I suspect that becomes apparent. I have, to date, written three novels and several short stories that are related to All Hallows Eve. "Harvest Moon" was the first short story I ever wrote that was set in a particular season and definitely the first to revolve around October 31st....

He ran as hard as he could, pumping his legs furiously and praying to God that
he could get away. Whatever it was that chased him sounded big, and he had no
desire to see it.
The early spring's chill embraced the world and Reggie Harker was lost in the bitter weather, lamenting that he'd ever come to Beldam Woods. The town was picturesque and everything he thought he was looking for, but that was before he'd pissed off something that was most decidedly not human.
Whatever the hell it was, it wanted to tear him apart. Just like it had torn Natalie to pieces...
